Paris is the centre of the fashion world

Paris has long been synonymous with haute couture and the pinnacle of fashion. However, in an increasingly globalized world, the question arises: Is Paris still the undisputed centre of the fashion world? While its historical legacy and continued influence are undeniable, other cities and new approaches are certainly making their mark.

The allure of Parisian fashion remains strong, evidenced by events like the Melbourne Fair, which features a remarkable collection of Parisian designer fashion spanning two generations, including iconic pieces from Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, and Lanvin. This collection, lovingly assembled over 40 years, offers a rare glimpse into the evolution of French couture. The Melbourne Fair also showcases a striking 1960s sequinned shift dress by Jean Patou, one of the most influential French fashion houses of the 20th century.

Beyond historical pieces, major exhibitions continue to highlight global fashion powerhouses. The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne is set to open a world-premiere exhibition, "Westwood | Kawakubo," on December 7, 2025. This exhibition pairs British designer Vivienne Westwood and Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons, exploring their ground-breaking designs and rule-breaking radicalism that subverted the status quo. The exhibition features over 140 innovative designs, including important loans from international museums like New York's Metropolitan Museum, The Victoria & Albert Museum, and Palais Galliera, alongside works from the NGV Collection. This demonstrates a recognition of diverse global influences in contemporary fashion.

Furthermore, the retail and commercial construction industry, a vital component of the fashion world's physical presence, is seeing significant changes. Storepro, an Australian retail fit-out business, has undergone a major management restructure to meet the needs of a "very different" post-COVID retail sector. This includes incorporating branding and experiential design to support client requests, recognizing that the retail sector has dramatically changed. This adaptability and focus on customer experience from a business perspective indicate a broader evolution in how fashion is presented and consumed globally.

While Paris undoubtedly maintains a significant position, the rise of other fashion capitals, the global recognition of designers from diverse backgrounds, and the evolving landscape of retail suggest a more fragmented and dynamic fashion world. Paris may still be a key player, but it shares the stage with a growing number of influential cities and creative forces.

Why Paris is the Centre of the Fashion World

Paris has long held the title of the fashion capital of the world—a reputation built on centuries of design innovation, cultural influence, and artistic excellence. From haute couture to prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear), the City of Light continues to set the tone for global fashion. But what exactly makes Paris the epicentre of style and elegance? Here's a closer look.

1. Historical Roots of Fashion Leadership

Paris' fashion dominance can be traced back to the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV, who used clothing as a symbol of power and prestige. The king supported the textile and luxury trades, helping Paris establish itself as a centre of fine craftsmanship. By the 19th century, designer Charles Frederick Worth—considered the first true fashion designer—founded the modern concept of haute couture in Paris, solidifying its global influence.

2. Birthplace of Haute Couture

Haute couture, or “high sewing,” is the pinnacle of fashion artistry, and Paris is its birthplace. Governed by strict rules set by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, only select fashion houses such as Chanel, Dior, and Givenchy are authorised to use the label. These maisons (houses) are known for creating custom, handmade garments with exquisite detail, showcasing Paris’ tradition of luxury and innovation.

3. Home to Iconic Fashion Houses

Some of the world’s most influential designers and brands are headquartered in Paris. From Coco Chanel’s timeless elegance to Christian Dior’s revolutionary "New Look" of the 1940s, Parisian designers have shaped fashion history. Today, global giants such as Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Saint Laurent, and Balmain continue to drive trends and push creative boundaries from their Parisian ateliers.

4. Paris Fashion Week

Paris hosts one of the “Big Four” fashion weeks (alongside New York, London, and Milan), and many in the industry consider it the most prestigious. Held twice a year for both womenswear and menswear, Paris Fashion Week features the most anticipated runway shows and is the grand finale of the global fashion month calendar. Designers, editors, celebrities, and influencers gather to see the latest collections, making it a hotbed of style and media attention.

5. A Culture of Art and Aesthetics

Paris is synonymous with art, architecture, and design—elements that heavily influence fashion. The city’s romantic streets, historic landmarks, and world-renowned museums such as the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay provide endless inspiration for designers. Fashion in Paris is not just about clothing; it's a form of cultural expression.

6. Education and Craftsmanship

Paris is home to some of the top fashion schools in the world, such as ESMOD and Institut Français de la Mode. These institutions attract aspiring designers from around the globe, training them in both creativity and technical mastery. Additionally, the city supports a network of skilled artisans in embroidery, tailoring, and leatherwork—integral to the survival of haute couture.

7. Global Style Influence

Trends born in Paris often ripple through the global fashion industry. French style—effortless, chic, and refined—is emulated worldwide. Parisian street style during fashion week garners almost as much attention as the runway shows themselves, showcasing the city’s unmatched sartorial flair.

Conclusion

Paris' position as the centre of the fashion world is not by accident—it is the result of centuries of artistic leadership, cultural prestige, and relentless innovation. Whether through the timeless allure of haute couture, the glamour of Fashion Week, or the influence of legendary designers, Paris remains the ultimate authority in global fashion. As long as style continues to be celebrated, Paris will likely keep its crown.
