Why We’re No Longer Dropping $$$ on Activewear



Once upon a time, premium activewear was treated like an investment piece - a $120 pair of leggings from a global sportswear giant or a $90 sports bra was almost a rite of passage for gym-goers. But in 2025, consumers are starting to rethink whether high price tags really translate to performance, comfort, or style.

The shift has been driven by two major forces: affordability pressures and the rise of fashion-led alternatives. With the cost of living hitting new highs, shoppers are questioning the value of splurging on premium brands when lower-cost labels now deliver similar fabrics, functionality, and style.

The rise of “hybrid wear”

Consumers aren’t just buying workout gear for the gym anymore, they want pieces that move seamlessly from a Pilates class to a coffee run, or from a HIIT session to a weekend brunch. The demand for hybrid activewear - styles that blend performance and lifestyle - is soaring, but without the expectation that it should cost triple digits.

Tech-driven fabrics, without the premium price 

Thanks to advancements in textile innovation, performance fabrics once exclusive to high-end labels are now accessible at a fraction of the cost. Instead of paying for the “status” of a logo, shoppers are increasingly prioritising accessibility, fabric innovation, and how the product fits into their everyday lifestyle 

The takeaway: Shoppers aren’t walking away from activewear altogether, but they’re walking away from paying hundreds for it. With rising living costs and growing access to high-performance fabrics, consumers are proving that comfort, confidence, and functionality don’t need to cost a fortune.
