From DIY decorations to online sourcing, families are embracing more cost-conscious ways to create memorable kids’ birthday celebrations.

Aussie families are spending more than ever on their kids' birthdays, even as rising living costs put pressure on household budgets. The average party now costs around $320, plus hundreds more on gifts each year. And at the top end, the price tag can skyrocket, with a single party hitting nearly $1,500.

As expectations for aesthetic, social media-inspired parties grow, many parents are rethinking how to celebrate meaningfully without overspending - increasingly turning to affordable, customisable options found online.

For Krystel Seach, an Aussie mum of three, that shift became real while planning her son Flynn’s second birthday. She was able to bring her “Two Fast” theme to life by using party decor sourced from Temu, the online marketplace.

“I’ve seen very similar items in stores, but usually smaller quantities and at a higher price,” she says. “Being able to get everything in one place and stay within budget made a huge difference.”

The party was designed to be simple but meaningful. “It honestly feels like he was just a baby, so I wanted something sentimental but still fun and age-appropriate,” she says. “He’s really into cars at the moment, so I tied in a racecar vibe. The ‘Two Fast’ theme worked perfectly — it made everything feel connected.”

Sourcing nearly everything from Temu - from racecar decorations and balloon garlands to cupcake stands and party bags - allowed her to create a cohesive, exciting and picture perfect setup without the typical price tag, spending  just $85 on decorations in total.

“I definitely approached this party more intentionally because of the cost of living. It was a small, immediate family gathering, nothing over the top,” Krystel says. “I didn’t set a strict budget, but I was mindful about where I shopped - looking for places that offered good value for money.”

Her experience reflects a broader shift among Australian parents, who are increasingly blending social media inspiration with more cost-conscious sourcing strategies.

Temu is  increasingly becoming part of the shift, enabling parents to access affordable, customisable party supplies in one place while maintaining creative control. The platform has also seen a 50% lift in perceived product quality and trust in Australia over the past year.

From elaborate balloon garlands and cake toppers to racecar-themed decorations and costumes, Aussie parents are sourcing and sharing their party essentials online to create Pinterest-worthy parties for a fraction of the cost.

The trend is being accelerated by social media, where creators are turning inspiration into step-by-step, replicable party setups.

In one widely shared video, creator @jameamme documented her baby’s first birthday built around an “It’s Fun to Be One” theme. Using balloons, themed props and hanging décor, much of it sourced from Temu, she created a polished, cohesive look that appeared high-end while remaining accessible in cost.

Similarly, another mum @abbylouise97 shared a Temu haul for her baby’s first birthday, highlighting both affordability and convenience. “I’m obsessed. That was all, like, maybe $100. And that’s all I need,” she said.
