Solo travel destinations for women

Solo Travel Advice

Exploring the world independently offers unparalleled freedom and unique experiences. For women considering solo travel, safety and enjoyment are key. Recent research sheds light on this growing trend and highlights destinations and precautions that can help ensure a fulfilling journey.

A new survey reveals that 3 in 4 Australian women are willing to pay more for safety when traveling alone, indicating a significant "safety premium" in the solo travel sector. By 2027, it's projected that 59% of Australian women will have traveled overseas alone and 76% domestically. The majority, 83%, will invest more in safer accommodation, tours, and experiences.

Popular Solo Travel Destinations and Preferences:

Domestic vs. International: While 45% of Australian women have traveled alone domestically, 31% have ventured internationally.

Top Destinations: For all-girls' trips (which can include solo travel aspects), popular destinations include Europe (50%), Australia and New Zealand (61%), and Hawaii (33%).

Reasons for Solo Travel: 38% enjoy the freedom, 28% travel out of necessity, and 24% prefer to meet friends and family en route rather than travel together for the whole trip.

Safety Measures and Industry Responses:

Proactive Precautions: 88% of women business travelers take safety precautions, such as informing family or work of their whereabouts (39%), avoiding after-hours events (25%), and placing obstacles against hotel doors (14%).

Industry Recognition: The travel industry is responding to the growing demand, with an increasing number of women-only tours available. Insight Vacations, for example, has launched women-only tours to destinations like Italy, Scotland, Portugal, Scandinavia, Egypt, India, and the USA, with 9 different itineraries. These tours often include unique experiences and are designed for solo female travelers, friends traveling together, or multi-generational female companions.

Travel Insurance: Travel insurance can help cushion unexpected problems like lost belongings or flight disruptions, allowing solo travelers to focus on enjoying their journey.

While concerns about personal safety exist, with 46% meticulously researching destinations to avoid risks, 37% remain undeterred by fear. Many women are choosing to invest in their personal safety, with 52% opting for pricier hotels in safer locations or private guided tours.

Ultimately, solo travel for women is a growing trend, with various resources and options available to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.
