How DIY upcycling saved this Mum $30K

Thrifty upcyclers Jess Brouwer and husband Rhys have saved $30K by doing her own DIY projects in the new home she bought before even viewing it.
The mum-of-three stretched her budget so she could ditch the busy city lifestyle and move near the beach, and is slowly renovating her Albany home, furnishing it with op-shop finds and council clean up cast offs.
Jess, 34, says living in a regional area with few affordable furniture shops means she has to get creative – and she is!
Her handiwork includes turning an old coffee table into a chessboard and painting a faux brick feature wall – but the transformation she’s most proud of is a dilapidated brown cabinet her neighbour was throwing out.
Jess says giving it a new lease of life with Dulux’s newly-released aerosol spray paint range in the ‘Bay Leaf’ and installing glass doors, the $15.90 paintinvestment means it could easily pass for a designer piece, like this cabinet on Amazon selling for over $1k.
Jess’ top tip for other thrifty DIY enthusiasts is to find something with good bones, get creative, and spraypaint! See more of her projects here and Instagram.
Dulux Marketing and Innovation Director, Richard Hansen, says the new aerosol range, which comes in 37 colours, 8 chalky finishes and 13 decorative effects is targeted at DIY enthusiasts.
“We know a growing number of Australians are passionate about upcycling and restoring furniture pieces and spray paint is an easy way to transform something old into something truly unique,” he says.
“Dulux Spray is perfect for small projects or even first time painters wanting to dabble with colour on a small scale.”
The new Dulux Spray range comes in 37 colours, 8 chalky finishes and 13 decorative effects, and the new soft touch applicator makes it easier to apply, reduces finger fatigue whilst helping to achieve a smoother, more even finish.
“Our aerosol category has had a total refresh with new packaging, a modern colour range and new technology making it more user-friendly.
“We know that colour is the number one driver of consumer choice and with this new range there’s a shade to suit a broad variety of spray projects from furniture and decor to arts and crafts,” he said.
