The hobbies your grandma enjoys are suddenly cool again - and Australian women are turning their homes into cosy craft studios.
Instead of expensive wellness trends or nights out, Gen Z and Millennial women are embracing low-cost hobbies that feel calming, creative and offline. Across TikTok, creators are showing off crochet setups, scrapbooking hauls and journaling supplies as people look for things to do that aren’t scrolling. And the data backs it up with Live Nation finding that Gen Z is “reviving the art” of a Baby Boomer favourite, “physical scrapbooking” to “create mems.”
The appeal? These hobbies are relatively cheap to start, easy to do at home and give people something to do that isn’t scrolling.
For many young Australians, the trend is less about becoming an expert and more about romanticising small everyday rituals.
Brisbane-based Leila Mulcahy, 22, started crocheting after seeing creators online share their projects.
“I wanted something relaxing that didn’t involve being on my phone,” she says. “Now I crochet most nights while watching TV.”
Leila says buying an affordable starter kit from online marketplace, Temu, made the hobby feel much less intimidating.
“I probably wouldn’t have started if I had to source everything separately.”
Meanwhile, Sydney creative Chloe Marfil has turned scrapbooking into her Sunday ritual.
“I’ll make a tea, put music on and spend hours doing it,” she says. “It feels really calming.”
